I'm still hoping to be back on April 13. It was wonderful seeing some of the students and family members during conference time. I'm anxious to see the rest of you when I return.

Week 2 in March: Write a convincing letter to your parents explaining why it’s a good idea for you to get an allowance, or an increase in allowance, stay up later, get a pet, or anything else you’ve been dreaming about.
Week 3 in March: The topic is: “What I’d Like to Do for Spring Vacation”. It can be a nonfiction or fiction piece.
Week 1 in April: Topic: “What I Did Do Over Spring Vacation”. Make a 4-square with an introduction, and 1-3 things you did over vacation. Be sure you give at least 3 details about each activity you did.

Due to a skiing injury, I’m taking some time to rest and ice my knee. This week, I’m going to try to be at school mornings to work with the children. I should hear soon when my surgery will be scheduled. After the surgery, I’ll probably be out from 4-6 weeks. We’ll try to make the transition as smooth as possible for the children and the guest teacher. I’ll be back as soon as I’m able!

The topic this week is: “How I Made My Worm Tower”. Students need to list step by step the procedure used in making the worm towers. Parent help on this could be in the form of questions, such as, “What was the first thing you did?” “What came next?” “Did you do anything before that?” If your child was absent on Friday, have your child choose something else you’ve done together to give directions. Discussing and writing together encourages your child to see you having fun with writing, and allows you an opportunity to spend time with your child while he/she learns. Please have your child bring the writing in by Friday.

If students didn’t bring their arrays back to me, I did not send the game information home. Please make sure your students return the array cards so they don’t get behind in math. Please keep all the games to play at home during the rest of the year.

My Gift to the World by Daisha and Family
If I could give a gift to anyone it would be money to the Heifer Project. I would give them money because I believe they would be able to purchase enough livestock to help many, many families. I think the Heifer Project is a great program because it helps teach people how to provide their families with the basic essentials to survive. That is why I would give my gift to the Heifer Project.

Upcoming Party
Parents who are coordinating our parties want to combine a bit of the Christmas party that was missed because of the weather with the Valentine’s party on February 13. They’d like to have a book exchange. Each child is asked to bring a wrapped, used (but in good condition) “everybody” book for a book exchange. The wrapping should have a "b" for boy, "g" for girl or an “e” for either boy or girl.
A Valentine’s list will come out a little later. If your child is giving Valentines, please be sure each child is included.

These are to be returned (all cut up into rectangles and in a plastic bag) by Tuesday. I’ll send them back home to stay along with the array games we’ve been working on in class. Please keep all the games to play at home during the rest of the year.

Grades 3-5 Math Vocabulary for State Assessment
Learning these vocabulary words will help your child do better on the state math assessment! Some of the words will be new to your child. Remember they are a list for grades 3-5. Use the vocabulary words in a game. Pause after each question for thinking or discussion time. With the right answer, your child can roll the dice and advance on any gameboard.

The spelling list your child needs to work on is attached. Continue encouraging your child’s correct spelling. These words will be recycled and checked again throughout the year.
Our goal this year at Forest Ridge is to improve students’ writing. Family writing assignment is the same as last week’s, since it was such a long one!: Write a story about what you did during your vacation. Start with a 4-square, telling about 3 separate things you did. Write an introduction to your story, then the 3 paragraphs about each of the 3 different activities. Write three detail sentences about each activity. Try to write transition sentences between your paragraphs (We’ve been working on this!) Write a concluding sentence. Writing together encourages your child to see you having fun with writing, and allows you an opportunity to spend time with your child while he/she learns. Please have your child bring the writing in by next Friday, January 16.
The first round of reading and math state assessments will be given to the third graders beginning on Friday.
We are studying astronomy in science (planets, sun, moon) and proper nutrition and digestion in health.
Students are reviewing 2-digit (second graders) and 3-digit (third graders) subtraction in math. We are also working on multiplication by studying groups of things and multiples.
Take home folders (with reading logs attached) need to be turned in on Thursday.

January 2 I e-mailed parents, who purchased Math Whizz for their child, their child's username and password. Please e-mail me if you didn't receive it or if you have any problems getting into the site.
December 10, I sent home a packet of spelling information. The spelling list your child needs to work on was attached. Continue encouraging your child’s correct spelling. These words will be recycled and checked again throughout the year. I’m sending home a list of Level 3 Priority Words”. All second graders should know these words as well. A list of “Level 3 Core Words” is also attached. The starred words are words that will be worked on during the year. The other words on the list are an accumulation of level one and level 2 words. Parents of second graders may focus more on the un-starred words. Parents of third graders may make sure their child knows all of the words through the year. Please hang onto these word lists through the year, and check your child’s spelling of them on a regular basis.
